National public holidays, 2028.

These seven apply everywhere in Australia under section 115 of the Fair Work Act 2009. Five are fixed calendar dates and the two Easter dates follow the standard Easter computation, so all seven are certain this far out.

Why the state dates are not listed yet

We publish public holiday dates once they are official, not once they are guessable. For 2028, several state dates simply do not exist yet:

  • Western Australiaproclaims the King's Birthday each year, in late September or early October, with no fixed rule to derive it from.
  • Queenslandsets the King's Birthday to the first Monday in October rather than June, and its show days are gazetted district by district.
  • Victoria's AFL Grand Final Friday moves with the fixture, which is not set until the season is played.
  • Every show day and regional day, from the Ekka to the Royal Hobart Show, needs a gazetted proclamation.

Anything on this page that could be stated with certainty has been. The rest arrives when the gazettes do. In the meantime, the 2027 calendar is complete for every state, and the public holidays hub has the current year by state.

State dates that do follow a fixed rule

These are set by formula in the relevant state legislation, so the 2028 date follows from the rule. Treat them as expected rather than gazetted, and confirm before you book anything that depends on them.

Planning leave around 2028

A public holiday inside a period of paid annual leave does not consume your balance: section 89 of the Fair Work Act 2009 treats you as being on the holiday, not on leave. That makes the weeks containing a holiday the cheapest time to take off. Model it on the annual leave calculator, or see which dates already sit beside a weekend on the long weekends page.

2028 Q & A

Public holidays 2028, answered.

What is settled for 2028 and what is still to be proclaimed.

When is Easter in 2028?
Easter Sunday falls on 16 April 2028. Good Friday is 14 April and Easter Monday is 17 April, both national public holidays. Easter Saturday is a public holiday in most states but not all.
Is New Year’s Day 2028 a long weekend?
1 January 2028 falls on a Saturday. Most states and territories substitute the following Monday, 3 January, which creates a three-day weekend. The substitution rule is set by each state, so check your own before booking.
Why are the state public holidays for 2028 not listed yet?
Several state dates are not fixed by a formula. Western Australia proclaims the King’s Birthday each year with no set rule, Victoria’s AFL Grand Final Friday moves with the fixture, and every show day and regional day needs a gazetted proclamation. Those proclamations are generally made a year or so ahead, so the 2028 dates do not exist yet. We publish dates once they are official rather than estimating them.
How many public holidays are there in Australia in 2028?
There are seven national public holidays that apply everywhere. Each state and territory adds its own, typically bringing the total to between 10 and 13 days depending on where you work and whether your area has a regional show day.
Does a public holiday during my annual leave use up my leave balance?
No. Under section 89 of the Fair Work Act 2009, if a public holiday falls inside a period of paid annual leave, you are taken to be on the public holiday rather than on leave, so the day is not deducted from your balance.
