This policy explains how leavecalculator.au (the “Site”, “we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, stores and discloses personal information. This policy aligns with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
1. The short version
- The calculators run entirely in your browser. We do not send the figures you type (salary, hours, tenure, dates) to our servers.
- We do not require sign-up, do not host user accounts, and do not store profiles.
- We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.
- We use privacy-respecting analytics to count anonymous page views and improve the Site.
- The Site is funded by third-party display advertising. Our ad partner and its demand partners can see your IP address, device and browser details and the page you are on, and may set their own cookies or identifiers. See section 3.2.
- You can contact us to access, correct or request deletion of any personal information we hold about you.
2. Personal information we collect
2.1 Information you give us directly
We only receive personal information when you choose to send it to us, for example by:
- Emailing us, or using the contact form, to ask a question or report a correction.
- Subscribing to a newsletter (if and when one is offered).
In those cases, we collect the information you provide (name, email, message body).
2.2 Information collected automatically
When you visit the Site, our hosting provider, our analytics tools and our advertising partner may collect:
- Approximate location (country/state level) derived from your IP address.
- Device type, operating system, browser, and screen size.
- The page you arrived from (referrer) and the pages you view on the Site.
- Aggregated, non-identifying performance metrics (e.g. Core Web Vitals).
2.3 Information we do NOT collect
- The numbers you enter into a calculator (salary, hours worked, leave balances). All maths runs in your browser.
- Tax File Numbers, bank details, or government identifiers. Never enter those into the Site.
- Audio, video, or biometric data.
3. Cookies, advertising and similar technologies
3.1 Our own cookies
We use a small number of essential cookies to remember your preferences (for example, the last state you selected) and to support privacy-respecting analytics.
You can disable cookies in your browser at any time. The calculators will continue to work without them.
3.2 Third-party advertising
The Site is free to use and is funded by display advertising. Ads are served by Adsterra, which in turn sells that space to its own advertisers and demand partners. We are paid for ad impressions and clicks.
We load every ad inside a sandboxed iframe, which prevents the ad code from reading the rest of the page, and we do not grant it permission to navigate you away from the Site or start a download. Even so, when an ad loads, Adsterra and its partners can see and may store:
- Your IP address, and the approximate location derived from it.
- Your device type, operating system, browser and screen size.
- The address of the page the ad appeared on, and the page you came from.
- Cookies or similar identifiers they set in your browser, which they may use to recognise your browser on other websites and to show interest-based (personalised) advertising.
What they never receive is anything you type into a calculator. Salary, hours, tenure and dates are processed entirely in your browser and are never transmitted to us or to any advertising partner.
We choose the sizes and positions of ad units, but we do not choose which individual ads are shown, and an ad appearing on the Site is not an endorsement by us. If you see an ad that is misleading, offensive or appears to be a scam, please report it through our contact page with the page address, and we will raise it with the network.
To limit this collection you can block or clear cookies in your browser, use your browser’s tracking-protection or private browsing mode, opt out of interest-based advertising from participating networks at youronlinechoices.com.au, or use an ad blocker. We do not block ad blockers, and the calculators work normally with one enabled. Adsterra’s own handling of your data is governed by its privacy policy.
4. How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate, secure and maintain the Site.
- Understand which calculators and guides are useful, so we can improve them.
- Respond to your questions, corrections, or feedback.
- Comply with our legal obligations.
We do not use your information for automated decision-making that has a legal or similarly significant effect on you.
5. Disclosure to third parties
We disclose personal information only to:
- Service providers who help us run the Site (hosting, content delivery, analytics, email). These providers are bound by confidentiality and processing agreements.
- Our advertising partner, as described in section 3.2. We do not hand them a list of visitors; their collection happens directly in your browser when an ad loads.
- Law enforcement or regulators where required by Australian law.
- A purchaser, in the event of a sale or restructure of the business, on the same terms as this policy.
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information.
6. Overseas storage
Some of our service providers (for example, our website host, our analytics provider and our advertising partner) may store data in data centres outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure those providers offer privacy protections comparable to the APPs. Our advertising partner operates internationally and processes data under its own policy rather than ours, which is why section 3.2 sets out how to limit what it collects.
7. Security
We use industry-standard security measures, including HTTPS encryption in transit, access controls, and reputable hosting providers. No internet service is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect the limited information we hold.
8. Retention
- Anonymous analytics: retained in aggregated form, typically up to 14 months.
- Email correspondence: retained for as long as needed to handle your enquiry, then archived or deleted in line with our records policy.
- Server access logs: typically retained 30 to 90 days for security and abuse prevention.
9. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act and the APPs you have the right to:
- Ask whether we hold personal information about you.
- Access that information.
- Ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.
- Ask us to delete information we are not required by law to keep.
- Make a privacy complaint.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us via the contact page. We aim to respond within 30 days.
10. Complaints
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or by phone on 1300 363 992.
11. Children
The Site is intended for adult Australian workers, employers and HR professionals. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the Site evolves or laws change. The current version is always the one published at this URL. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above.
13. Contact
For privacy questions, requests or complaints, contact our privacy contact via the contact page.
