The answer, and how it is worked out

The formula. Leave balance in hours / your ordinary daily hours = days of leave.

76 / 7.6 = 10 days on the standard full-time day.

The only variable is the length of your ordinary working day. A 38-hour week spread over five days gives a 7.6-hour day, which is the most common Australian arrangement and the default above. A 40-hour week over five days gives an 8-hour day, a four-day compressed week gives a 9.5-hour day, and a 12-hour shift roster changes the answer again. Payroll tracks the balance in hours precisely because the day length is not universal.

The 7.6-hour row is the standard full-time day under a 38-hour week and is the figure most Australian payroll systems use. Check your own award or agreement if your ordinary hours are set differently.

What 76 hours means in weeks

Section 87 of the Fair Work Act 2009 expresses annual leave in weeks, not hours or days: four weeks a year for a full-time or part-time employee, five for a qualifying shift worker. Converting back to weeks is therefore the figure that maps to the statutory entitlement.

  • On a 38-hour week: 2 weeks.
  • On a 40-hour week: 1.9 weeks.
  • As a share of the 152-hour full-time annual accrual: 50% of a year.

Part-time and irregular hours

A part-time employee accrues the same four weeks a year, but each week is worth their own ordinary hours rather than 38. Someone working 22.8 hours over three days has a 7.6-hour day like a full-timer, so 76 hours is still 10 days for them, but it represents a much larger share of their annual entitlement. If your hours vary week to week, the day figure is an estimate and the hours balance is the number that actually governs your pay. See casual vs permanent for how casual employment differs again.

Convert a different balance

The hours to days calculator converts any balance, with your own daily hours. Nearby figures:

What the balance is worth

Hours matter most when the balance is paid out. Section 90(2) of the Fair Work Act requires unused annual leave to be paid at the rate you would have received had you taken it, so 76 hours is paid at your ordinary rate, plus 17.5% leave loading if your award provides it on payout. The annual leave payout calculator applies the ATO Schedule 7 treatment, and the leave accrual calculator shows how a balance like this builds up in the first place.

If a balance this size has accumulated, excessive annual leave covers when an employer can direct you to take it, and cashing out annual leave covers the alternative.

Q & A

76 hours of annual leave.

The conversions people look up alongside this one.

How many days is 76 hours of annual leave?
76 hours of annual leave is 10 days on a standard 7.6-hour day, which is the ordinary day for a full-time employee on a 38-hour week worked over five days. On an 8-hour day the same balance is 9.5 days. The number of days changes with your ordinary daily hours, which is why payroll tracks the balance in hours rather than days.
How many weeks is 76 hours of annual leave?
2 weeks for a full-time employee on a 38-hour week, because a week of leave is worth a week of your ordinary hours. On a 40-hour week the same 76 hours is 1.9 weeks. Under section 87 of the Fair Work Act 2009 the entitlement itself is expressed in weeks, not hours, so this is the figure that maps back to the statutory four weeks a year.
Is 76 hours of annual leave a lot?
A full-time employee accrues 152 hours a year, so 76 hours is 6 months of accrual. That is a normal working balance rather than an excessive one.
What is 76 hours of annual leave worth in dollars?
Multiply the hours by your base hourly rate. At $35 an hour, 76 hours is $2,660 before tax. If your award provides 17.5% leave loading on leave taken, the same balance is worth $3,126. Use the calculator above with your own rate, and see the payout calculator for the termination treatment.
